The improvements

We may make a range of improvements to your home as part of our upgrade work. Find out more about what they are and how they work below.

Solar Panels

Solar Panels

Solar panels, also known as solar photovoltaics (PV), convert sunlight into electricity.
This means that if you use electric appliances such as washing machines and ovens when the sun is shining, it will cost you less as you need less or even no electricity from the electricity network (your supplier) throughout the day.

Loft insulation

Did you know an uninsulated home loses around 25% of its heat through the roof?
Loft insulation helps keep the heat in longer meaning you use less energy and less energy means cheaper bills.
Cynon Taf installs loft insulation to 300mm (12inches) to make the roof as warm as possible.

Triple-glazed windows

You may have heard of double-glazed windows, which use an air gap to reduce the amount of heat lost through the windows.
Triple glazing has three panes of glass instead of the two in double-glazing, meaning that it has two air gaps instead of one. Twice the air gaps of double-glazed windows mean twice the buffer against cold air.
Triple-glazed windows will also reduce the amount of noise you can hear coming in from outside.

Smart heating controls

Smart heating controls are internet-connected devices that allow you to manage and automate your central heating system from a smartphone app, voice assistant, or computer. They offer convenience and can help reduce energy waste, potentially lowering heating bills.
How smart heating controls work
A smart heating system typically consists of three main components:

  • Smart thermostat: The central controller that connects your heating system to the internet via your Wi-Fi network.
  • Smart hub/boiler connection: A wireless component that plugs directly into your boiler to relay commands from the thermostat.
  • Smartphone app: Allows you to remotely manage temperature settings and heating schedules from anywhere with an internet connection.

For multi-room heating, the system can also include Smart Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs). These replace your standard radiator valves to control the temperature of individual rooms, enabling you to heat only the spaces you are using.

Immersion solar diverter

For some suitable homes, we can fit a solar diverter to your hot water cylinder. This device sends any unused electricity your solar panels make to the immersion heater in your hot water tank. That way, your water is heated using free solar electricity instead of your gas boiler. The immersion heater only comes on when the solar panels a generating unused electricity.

Environmental sensors

Sometimes we may need to install environmental sensors in your property.
Environmental sensors are devices designed to measure and monitor various aspects of the surrounding environment, such as temperature, humidity and indoor air quality.
We will contact you to schedule a convenient time for an electrician to visit your home and install the sensors. The data collected from these sensors will assist us in determining the necessary steps to make your home more energy-efficient. We will not be sharing the data with anyone, and we will only receive the relevant data.

Gateway hub

If you have sensors fitted, we will also fit a Gateway hub. The Gateway hub is a device that collects the data from your sensors and transfers it automatically to us. The gateway will generally be placed near your fuse box, is there is a good signal. If not, the electrician will search for the best signal within your home and install it there.

Heating Controls

Heating controls help manage how often your home heats up and to what temperate.  It’s important to make the most of the control you have over your heating to make sure no money or energy is being wasted.  See below for more information about how to use heating controls
